My son James (Jamie) brought this home from school today -- the result of his free activity time in class (now in his second week of Prep!).
He calls it a Music Map.
From left to right, top to bottom, what you see here is (1) The Fog, (2) The Giant Play Slide, (3) The City, (4) The Dark Cave, (5) The Road, (6) The Train Tracks, (7) The Pacific Ocean, and (8) The Big Forest.
But here's where it gets interesting and exciting...
He's also created soundtracks to go with each part of the map. They are based on classical music tracks he's picked up from The Little Einsteins cartoon series, as well as a couple of tunes from Pocoyo. I was quite stunned to see that the notes he's drawn there for each segment of the picture actually do (to him) depict certain sounds and rhythm -- he hums each tune and slides his fingers across the 'score' he's drawn across each picture.
It's wonderful to hear him humming the quiet calm of the fog, the joyful thrill ride of the giant slide, the piercing car horn-like flurry of the city, the deep ominous mystery of the dark cave, the rhythmic rushing beat of the railway track, and the rise and fall of the Pacific Ocean.
A true work of art indeed. Nicely done, Jamie!
