I blogged not so long ago about the delightful experience I've been having with reading since getting a new Sony eReader for my birthday.
Turns out my 5-year-old lad is quite taken with it as well.
Whenever he sees me using it, he dashes over and insists on flipping the pages for me using the touchscreen. That can get a bit old for both of us (me trying to read with him perched right next to me with an index finger poised and ready to turn a page, and him becoming a bit disappointed with the fact that each new page is as illegible and "unfun" to him as the last).
I've been brainstorming and experimenting a lot with digital book content and formatting, and today it occured to me that I should try putting one of his books on the eReader, so that he could use it on his own, with a story he would like.
A quick 15 minutes of formatting later, and a quick drag and drop of the PDF from my documents to the eReader, and here's what we had for bedtime tonight...
A pity we can only get grayscale on the eReader, but Jamie didn't seem to mind in the least. The deliberate formatting with large text also worked a real treat for the small eReader screen, though as you can see we watched it in landscape mode, which helped to keep everything big.
Really makes me wonder about the potential of digital publications for children...
And also has me thinking that an iPad for the lad in the very near future might not be such a silly (or premature) move after all.
