I'm not sure it's really the done thing to go reposting (or referencing) your own past blog posts, but considering how many teachers are heading back to new terms and new classes (and also considering the fact I think it is possibly one of my most important posts), I hope you won't mind me rebooting this post from earlier this year:
To innovate within concrete, start with the cracks
Looking at a new syllabus and/or set of textbooks you need to use in class, I think this issue of finding and exploiting cracks is especially relevant.
