My last official presentation in Korea was in November last year, when I presented at the Compass Day Conference at Seoul National University of Education on the topic of Testing and Assessing Writing Skills.
You can access the video of the entire presentation here:
Testing and Assessing Writing Skills
BEFORE you go clicking on that link, you should be aware of a couple of things (any or all of the following may dissuade you from wanting to watch it!):
- It's long (55 minutes or so);
- It's not all that entertaining (I was asked to do a very academic presentation for the purposes of this particular event, and the topics of writing and testing are pretty challenging to present in fun and humorous ways);
- It covers the writing sections of the CEF (Common European Framework), ALTE standards, and Cambridge ESOL exam suite in some detail, as my audience (Korea-based American English-teaching instructors) was almost entirely unaware of these frameworks and tests;
- In addition to a lot of discussion about the nature of writing for second or foreign language learners, there are big emphases on things like validity, reliability, holistic versus analytical scoring, etc;
- There are much better presentation videos (with much better presenters) from the same event (see below) that I would point you to before watching mine!
Okay, to be honest, the only reason I agreed to be a "special guest" at this event was because I would get to see some legends like David Paul and Paul Nation in action. Both of them were outstanding at this event.
David Paul: Teaching Children to Communicate and Teaching Phonics Effectively
Paul Nation: Developing Fluency in Reading and Vocabulary Teaching Techniques
I also very much enjoyed David Harrington's presentation at the event about Using Classroom Discussions to Improve Speaking Ability
